Welcome to Košice
The town Košice is because of its importance and size the second most significant in Slovakia (the capital Bratislava is considered the first). It lies in the Eastern part of Slovakia. Košice is the first European city which received its own document of coat of arms. It was the first town in Europe to be given the right to use it by the sovereign Louis I. in 1369. The next primacy is connected to sport – each first October Sunday there starts Košice Peace Marathon - the oldest European and the second oldest in the world (founded in 1924). The St. Elizabeth Cathedral is Slovakia’s biggest church and the easternmost gothic cathedral built in Europe. Historic centre is the biggest town reserve in Slovakia. The oldest secondary school was established in Košice, too – The Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering, in 1872. In our town there is also the largest ZOO in Central Europe having an area of 288 hectares and the largest botanical garden in Slovakia with the biggest collection of cactuses in the former Czechoslovakia. Children Railway in Čermeľ Valley is the oldest and the only one that can be found in Slovakia.
